Donald L. Smith, of Falmouth went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, January 5, 2022, after 90 years of a long and loving life.
Don was born on February 12, 1931, in Worcester, MA. He joined the Army in 1952 and served for two years during the Korean War. He attended Earlham College in Indiana and Clark University in Worcester where he earned his master’s degree.
He was previously married to Shirley for 45 years. They had two sons David and Michael. They settled in Spencer, MA where he built his house and had a tree farm. He was active in 4H. He was a fourth-grade teacher in Auburn, MA and after retiring they moved to Falmouth where they regularly attended Falmouth Baptist Church. Don was a trustee at the church doing repairs and volunteered with Seniors Helping Seniors. He loved gardening, fishing, bowling, and dancing.
After Shirley’s passing, he met and married his beloved wife of 18 years Joan on September 27, 2002. Together they had 11 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. He is survived by his sister Melanie Guillaume and was preceded in death by his brothers Craig and Leonard.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 13 at Chapman Funerals & Cremations, 475 Main Street, Falmouth from 10AM – 12PM with Funeral Service at 12PM. Burial will follow at MA National Cemetery, Connery Ave., Bourne, MA at 1:30PM. At the request of the family, please wear a mask.
